Is Mercury in retrograde right now?

The honest answer, computed from real astronomy — not a guess. Plus the exact dates of every Mercury retrograde this year and next.

Reading the sky…

Calculating Mercury’s motion from a live ephemeris.

Watch the illusion happen

Live model, real positions: the dashed line is what Earth sees. When Earth overtakes Mercury, the traced path on the zodiac ring slides backward in rose — that's all a retrograde is.

Mercury retrograde dates

Loading dates…

Computed in your browser from the same ephemeris as your birth chart — the open-source Astronomy Engine — by scanning Mercury’s apparent ecliptic longitude day by day and recording the dates its direction flips. The window runs from about seven months back to fourteen months ahead, so the row above the current one is the retrograde you just came through. Because the scan steps a day at a time, each station date is exact to within a day; the exact hour depends on your time zone. Where every number on Zodiux comes from.

What it actually means
The real mechanics

Nothing is moving backward

Mercury never reverses. A few times a year, Earth overtakes it in orbit and — from where we stand — Mercury appears to drift backward through the zodiac for about three weeks. Real astronomy, optical illusion. We compute the exact turn from the same ephemeris that powers your birth chart. See where every planet is right now for the rest of the sky.

How to play it

Don’t panic, do back up

You don’t need to cancel your life. Back up your files, re-read the contract before you sign, double-check the address before you send, and give people a little extra grace in conversation. Tie up loose ends rather than starting brand-new ones. That’s the whole playbook.

The 2026 Mercury retrograde calendar

The final window of 2026 opens October 24 and closes November 13. Three windows per year, about three weeks each — the live chip above is the truth between them; this table is the plan-ahead view. (Dates verified against published astrocalendars 2026-09-22; almanacs disagree on the sign emphasis at the October–November boundary, so dates — not sign calls — are what we state.)

WindowDates (2026)Length
1st — winter→springFeb 26 – Mar 20~22 days
2nd — midsummerJun 29 – Jul 23~24 days
3rd — autumnOct 24 – Nov 13~20 days

Mercury is direct roughly 80% of the year — the long-form explanation of the windows, the boundary caveat, and how the live status is computed is on the deep-dive page.

Survive the next one

A planner, a backup drive, and a little patience go further than panic. Stock up before the next station.

Why this is here: the one thing the traditional reading actually asks of you is to write things down and re-check them, so a dated planner or journal is the only product on this page that maps to the advice. Nothing here changes what the sky is doing.

Transiting retrograde is not natal retrograde

Two different things share the word. The status above is a transit: where Mercury is in the sky right now, the same for everyone alive. A natal Mercury retrograde means Mercury happened to be retrograde on the day you were born — roughly one person in five — and that is a permanent feature of your chart, not a three-week weather event.

They are read completely differently. The transit is treated as a recurring window for reviewing, revising and re-reading things. A natal retrograde is read as a thinking style: internal first, out loud second. Neither is a problem, and neither predicts anything. Run your birth chart to see which Mercury you have, or read what retrograde actually means for the geometry.

Common questions
Is Mercury in retrograde right now?

The status panel at the top of this page answers that live — it is computed in your browser from Mercury’s real position, not from a hard-coded date list, so it is right whenever you load the page. If it says no, it also names the next window.

How often does Mercury go retrograde?

Three or four times a year, for roughly three weeks each time — so Mercury spends about a fifth of the year apparently moving backward. It is the most frequent of the planetary retrogrades because Mercury orbits fastest, lapping Earth’s viewing angle more often than anything else.

What should you avoid during Mercury retrograde?

Astrologically, nothing is forbidden, and Zodiux does not tell anyone to postpone their life. The traditional reading is a review period rather than a launch period: back things up, re-read before signing, confirm details, and expect to revisit conversations. Treat it as a prompt to be careful, not a reason to delay something that matters.

Want the retrogrades that actually hit your chart — not just Mercury, but the transits headed for your placements? That’s what Cusp+ tracks.
