Capricorn · second decan · The architect who wants it beautiful
Your decan
The second decan of Capricorn is Saturn's ambition softened — just enough — by Venus-Taurus. You still climb, you still grind, but you're building toward something that also has to look and feel worthy of the effort. You want the achievement and the life around it to actually be good.
What sets your third apart
Venus, by way of Taurus, adds appetite to Capricorn's austerity. The other two Capricorn decans can go without; you don't want to. You work hard and you want comfort, beauty, and reward to show for it — which makes you more human and more grounded than the pure-Saturn versions, but it also means you can get seduced by the trappings before you've finished building the structure.
Your gift
Discipline that knows what it's working for — you aim at quality, not just the summit.
Your watch-out
Venus whispers 'you've earned a rest' halfway up; comfort becomes the exit from the climb.
The exact degrees, and who rules them
A decan is a third of a sign: ten degrees of zodiac, not a mood. Yours is Capricorn 10°00′ to 19°59′ — the second ten degrees the Sun crosses on its way through Capricorn, roughly Jan 1 – Jan 10 in most years. Sun-sign dates shift by up to a day between years because the tropical year is not a whole number of days, so if you were born within about 24 hours of either end, run the actual chart rather than trusting a date table.
| Tradition | Ruler | What it governs |
|---|---|---|
| Sign ruler (all three decans) | Saturn | The baseline Capricorn everyone shares |
| Chaldean face | Mars | drive and confrontation |
| Triplicity decanate | Venus | attraction, values and ease |
The two systems disagree, which is normal and worth knowing: the Chaldean faces run the seven classical planets in speed order straight through all 36 decans without regard to sign boundaries, while the triplicity decanates give the first third of every sign to its own ruler and then step through the other signs of the same element. Most popular astrology quotes the triplicity ruler (Venus) without saying so; the older Capricorn face here is Mars.
Read either way, the point is the same: a softening — this third negotiates where the rest of the sign would push.
How it actually shows up
The decan is a modifier, not a second sign. It shifts emphasis inside Capricorn rather than replacing it — so everything true of Capricorn is still true of you, with attraction, values and ease turned up. Three places people notice it:
- Under pressure. A Capricorn sun typically takes on more work instead of talking. In this third that reaction takes its colour from Venus — attraction, values and ease is what the reaction ends up being about.
- In how you start things. The second decan sits in the middle of the sign, the most settled and least extreme of the three.
- Next to the other two. Compare it directly: the first decan (Dec 22 – Dec 31) runs on Saturn, and the third decan (Jan 11 – Jan 19) runs on Mercury. Same sign, three noticeably different settings.
What it is not: a personality test, and not something to weigh against your Moon or rising, both of which say considerably more about you than a third of your sun sign does. The big three is where to look next.
Your decan is a hint. Your chart is the answer.
The decan refines your sun sign — but your moon, rising and every planet are where the real story lives. Run your full birth chart, free.
Degree ranges are exact by definition (each decan is ten degrees of zodiac); the calendar dates shift by up to a day between years. Rulerships are the classical Chaldean face and triplicity decanate assignments, both stated above.
