Born Jan 30 – Feb 8
Aquarius · second decan · The system thinker who never shuts up
Your decan
The second decan of Aquarius takes the sign's big-picture wiring and runs Mercury's restless, language-hungry current through it. You don't just see how the system works — you have to explain it, map it, argue it, and post about it. You're the most verbally brilliant and intellectually relentless of the Aquarians.
What sets your third apart
Mercury, by way of Gemini, gives Aquarius's fixed ideology a quick, darting mind that moves faster than it commits. It makes you more articulate and more curious than the other two decans, but it also means your grand principles can fragment into a hundred half-explored ideas. You can talk circles around the room while actually landing nowhere.
Your gift
The rare combination of systemic vision and the words to make other people finally see it.
Your watch-out
Mercury keeps the tabs open; you explain the revolution beautifully and never actually start it.
The exact degrees, and who rules them
A decan is a third of a sign: ten degrees of zodiac, not a mood. Yours is Aquarius 10°00′ to 19°59′ — the second ten degrees the Sun crosses on its way through Aquarius, roughly Jan 30 – Feb 8 in most years. Sun-sign dates shift by up to a day between years because the tropical year is not a whole number of days, so if you were born within about 24 hours of either end, run the actual chart rather than trusting a date table.
| Tradition | Ruler | What it governs |
|---|---|---|
| Sign ruler (all three decans) | Saturn / Uranus | The baseline Aquarius everyone shares |
| Chaldean face | Mercury | mind, language and exchange |
| Triplicity decanate | Mercury | mind, language and exchange |
Both surviving decan systems agree here, which is not the usual case — the Chaldean faces and the triplicity decanates both hand this stretch to Mercury. When they agree, the sub-flavour is about as well attested as decan theory gets.
Read either way, the point is the same: commentary — this third narrates itself, and thinks a feeling before it feels it.
How it actually shows up
The decan is a modifier, not a second sign. It shifts emphasis inside Aquarius rather than replacing it — so everything true of Aquarius is still true of you, with mind, language and exchange turned up. Three places people notice it:
- Under pressure. A Aquarius sun typically detaches and analyses from orbit. In this third that reaction takes its colour from Mercury — mind, language and exchange is what the reaction ends up being about.
- In how you start things. The second decan sits in the middle of the sign, the most settled and least extreme of the three.
- Next to the other two. Compare it directly: the first decan (Jan 20 – Jan 29) runs on Saturn, and the third decan (Feb 9 – Feb 18) runs on Venus. Same sign, three noticeably different settings.
What it is not: a personality test, and not something to weigh against your Moon or rising, both of which say considerably more about you than a third of your sun sign does. The big three is where to look next.
Your decan is a hint. Your chart is the answer.
The decan refines your sun sign — but your moon, rising and every planet are where the real story lives. Run your full birth chart, free.
Degree ranges are exact by definition (each decan is ten degrees of zodiac); the calendar dates shift by up to a day between years. Rulerships are the classical Chaldean face and triplicity decanate assignments, both stated above.
